Vinous Neal Martin - 23 Dec 24
The 1929 Cos d’Estournel is more aged in color than the 1928 with a wide tawny rim. It has a gentle, unprepossessing bouquet with hints of kirsch, autumn leaves, sandalwood and a subtle aged Colheita Port-inspired scent. The palate is medium-bodied and shows a touch more flesh and vestiges of fruit than the 1928. This has a kinship with the brilliant 1949 thanks to its effortless cohesion. Towards the finish there are notes of iron rust, blood orange and tart red cherry fruit, then with further aeration, allspice, white pepper and a touch of sage. This is an astonishing 1929, one of the finest that I have tasted. Tasted at the Cos d’Estournel vertical at the property.

Saint-Estèphe Fine Wine

Saint-Estephe

Saint-Estèphe, a prestigious Bordeaux appellation in the northern Médoc, is known for robust, full-bodied red wines primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. These wines are deeply coloured, with firm tannins and rich flavours of dark fruits, earth, and spice, making them structured and age-worthy. Top producers include Château Cos d'Estournel, Château Montrose, and Château Calon-Ségur. The region's gravelly and clay-rich soils contribute to the wines' distinctive character and complexity.
